Jane Avril (1868-1943) and artists who depicted her
Lecture, ca 40 min
2025
In this lecture, I’ve gathered all the depictions I have found of dancer Jane Avril (1868-1943), who was a friend and model of the artist Toulouse-Lautrec. (1864-1901.)
– The first half of the lecture shows Toulouse-Lautrec’s depictions of her.
– The second half shows how other artists, such as Picasso, Anqentin, and Biais have depicted her.
– I also show how contemporary artists have used her as a subject.
The lecture is part of the larger body of work about my relation to French dance performer Jane Avril (1868-1943) I’ve felt connected to her personality and artistic expression ever since the very first time I saw images and photos of her in 2004.
